• “Designer built OSU collection” – Columbus Dispatch, January 5, 2010

The Ohio State University’s Historic Costume & Textiles Collection presented a tribute exhibition honoring Charles Kleibacker and his contributions to the Collection and the University while he was Designer-in-Residence and Curator from 1984-1995. The exhibition ran October 28, 2010 through May 21, 2011 and featured thirteen Kleibacker ensembles that either Charles or some of his clients donated to the Collection. These dresses represent a microcosm of Charles’ professional life, showcasing his dedication to quality, engineering, construction details and educating students.

In addition to the garments, images of some of the many remarkable pieces owned by the Collection and acquired by Charles during his tenure at OSU were shown. Among these are some of the most important designer and period fashions and textiles in the Collection including gowns by Charles Frederick Worth, Paul Poiret, Madeleine Vionnet, and Coco Chanel.

Additional video components in the exhibition featured a documentary of Charles’ life created by Jeff Simms of the Columbus Museum of Art and a compilation of images from the files of the Collection of Charles “in action” on the various exhibitions, fund-raisers and Friends events he initiated.

For over two and a half years, volunteers from the Buckeye State Button Society (BSBS) have been working steadily to sort through Ann W. Rudolph’s extensive button collection, which was bequeathed to the Historic Costume & Textiles Collection in 1991.

Organizing the collection was a painstakingly slow process until Marilyn Regrut, then president of the BSBS, first contacted the HCTC in 2006. A year later, an intensive operation to sort through Mrs. Rudolph’s buttons and get them organized, stored, catalogued, and photographed began.

Happily, the collection is now organized and properly stored, with the cataloging and photography currently being worked on. As a thank you for all their countless hours of volunteerism, we at the HCTC decided our next exhibition in the upper level Gladys Keller Snowden gallery would coordinate with the BSBS Spring meeting theme of “Flora in Fashion.”

The Historic Costume & Textiles Collection houses over 12,000 artifacts of material and popular culture, some of which provided inspiration for researchers ranging from undergraduate students to independent scholars.

Thirty items on display represent some of the variety of disciplines linked to textile and historic clothing research. They are:

• Historical research, including business history and biographies
• Art Historical research
• Design
• Textile Science research

Artifacts are accompanied by the corresponding publications — theses, dissertations, honors theses, books, essays, and chapters in books. Visitors are encouraged to pick up the publications and read them.

The Sewer’s Art: Quality, Fashion and Economy features 49 beautifully constructed garments that reflect the creative and artistic talents of four fashion and style-conscious women from the beginning to the end of the 20th century who sewed for economical reasons and/or for self expression, to create high quality fashionable clothing.

Introduction

Home sewn clothing is rarely, if ever, exhibited in a museum. It is not considered ‘art’ in the academic sense. Art museums primarily showcase the work of ‘professional’ artists, and the clothing most often exhibited in art museums is of the ‘fashion designer’ variety. [Read more…]

Is anything more iconic or versatile than the little black dress? Gayle Strege, curator of Ohio State University’s Historic Costume & Textiles Collection doesn’t think so. Beginning October 19, sixty of the collection’s little black dresses will be on display through May 10, 2008. Located on campus in Campbell Hall’s Geraldine Schottenstein Wing at 1787 Neil Avenue, it’s a convenient stop for students and visitors alike.

The little black dress is not as simple as its name implies. How can it be when it ruined the reputation of Madame X on the one hand, and elevated Audrey Hepburn’s star status on the other? [Read more…]
